The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the NAVY ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL to

                                      CORPORAL LEE E. BOLLINGER

                                     UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

For outstanding achievement in the superior performance of his duties in the field of leadership achievement as set forth in the following

    CITATION:

“While serving as Squad Leader with company G, Second Battalion, First Marines, First Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam from 17 November 1968 to 19 September 1969, Corporal Bollinger performed his duties in an exemplary manner. Participating in three major combat operations, including Operations Meade River and Durham Peak, as well in over 200 combat patrols and ambushes, he repeatedly distinguished himself by his courage and composure under fire. On 8 June 1969, his squad was on patrol during Operation Pipestone Canyon when it came under intense small arms fire from a well-concealed hostile force. Reacting instantly, Corporal Bollinger skillfully deployed his men into advantageous firing positions, and directed his squad in delivering a heavy volume of extremely accurate suppressive fire on the enemy, resulting in three hostile soldiers killed and the enemy's retreat from the area. Constantly concerned for the combat rediness of his unit, he  tirelessly trained his men and molded them into an effective fighting force. Corporal Bollinger's  leadership, professional competence and steadfast devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself, the Marine Corps and the Naval Service."
