The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting
the NAVY COMMENDATION MEDAL to

    SERGEANT  RAYMOND CARROLL ROBERTS

   UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS RESERVE

For service as set forth in the following

    CITATION

               “For meritorious service while serving ith Company E, Second Battalion, First Marines, First Marine Division in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam from 10 September 1966 to 10 October 1967. During this period, Sergeant ROBERTS, then a Corporal, performed the duties of Assistant Gunner, Gunner, Squad leader and Mortar Section leader in an exemplary and highly proficient manner. His versatility, superior marksmanship and knowledge of jungle warfare tactics greatly enhanced the combat posture of his unit. Displaying outstanding leadership ability and steadfast dedication to duty, Sergeant ROBERTS participated in thirteen major operations and numerous small unit patrols and ambushes. Tirelessly training his men in tactics, marksmanship and weapons maintenance, he was instrumental in inflicting many casualties upon the memy. During Operation Union, Sergeant ROBERTS carried a mortally wounded Marine and led three companions through an enemy infested trench systern to safety. Enroute, he directed accurate mortar fire against an enemy position and succeeded in killing one and wounding two Viet Cong soldiers. His determinition and bold fighting spirit inspired all who observed him and contribted significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. By his exceptional professional skill, exemplary leadership and unswerving devotion to duty, Sergeant ROBERTS upheld the finest traditions of the Marire Corps and of the Unted States Naval Service.”

Sergeant ROBERTS is authorized to wear the Combat  "V".
