The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the NAVY ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL to

Private First Class James A. Kirk

                      UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

For outstanding achievement in the superior performance of his duties in the field of leadership achievement as set forth in the following

    CITATION:

“While serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company F, Second Battalion, First Marines, First Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam from 24 August 1968 to 16 June 1969, Private First Class Kirk performed his duties in an exemplary manner. Participating in three major combat operations, including Operations Pipestone Canyon, Garrard Bay, and Meade River, he repeatedly distinguished himself by his courage and composure under fire. While conducting a combat patrol during Operation Pipestone Canyon, his team came under intense fire from a hostile force occupying a treeline position. Reacting instantly, he skillfully maneuvered his men into advantageous firing positions and employing a 3.5 rocket launcher, delivered accurate rocket fire into the treeline, thereby suppressing the enemy fire. Constantly concerned for the combat readiness of his unit, he tirelessly trained his men and molded them into an effective fighting force. Private First Class Kirk's leadership, professional competence and steadfast devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself, the Marine Corps and the Naval Service."
