Sergeant Douglas H. Butler
"While serving as a Section Leader with Headquarters and
Service Company, Second Battalion, First Marines, First Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam from 17 October 1967 to 19 June 1969, Sergeant Butler performed his duties in an exemplary manner. Participating in eight major combat operations, including Operations Pegasus, Scotland II, and Meade River, he repeatedly distinguished  himself by his courage and composure under fire. Demonstrating exceptional professional ability, he skillfully supervised the tactical deployment of his men during engagements with the enemy and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. On 12 May 1969, his unit's position was assaulted by a company-sized Sapper Unit, employing small arms and mortar fire. Reacting instantly, he ably maneuvered his men into advantageous firing positions, delivered accurate fire and was instrumental in repelling the hostile soldiers. Constantly concerned for the combat readiness of his unit, he tirelessly trained his men and molded them into an effective fighting force. Sergeant Butler's leadership, professional competence and steadfast devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself, the Marine Corps and the Naval Service. "
