The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the
BRONZE STAR MEDAL to

                                   CORPORAL DONALD YOUMANS

           UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

For service as set forth in the following

    CITATION

“For meritorious service in connection with combat operations against the enemy as Rifleman, Company E, 2d Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam from August 1969 through August 1970. Displaying exceptional courage, skill, and leadership, Corporal Youmans continually served in the field, primarily engaged in over 200 day and night patrols and ambushes as part of a saturation patrolling campaign designed to prevent the enemy from firing rockets and mortars in their area of operation. Operating in an extremely dangerous area, he volunteered to serve as point man for his squad on more than 100 patrols. On 14 April 1970, when Corporal Youmans's patrol encountered an enemy unit setting up a mortar, he immediately organized a base of fire and maneuvered his squad to envelope and assault the enemy position. Corporal Youmans's immediate actions forced the enemy from the area, leaving behind the mortar sight, and explosives and munitions, and prevented an attack on his platoon. On 7 June 1970, while on a five man patrol, the point man tripped a booby trap injuring himself and another Marine. Corporal Youmans quickly tended to the injured Marines, directed security, and called for a medevac. His quick actions were instrumental in saving the life of the severely wounded point man. By his exceptional professionalism, courageous leadership, and steadfast devotion to duty, Corporal Youmans reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.”

The Combat Distinquishing Device is authorized.
